Cameraman barred from Carlow grounds

October 02, 2008
In a bizarre move by the Carlow County Board, a long serving cameraman has been barred from Dr Cullen Park after he tried to gain entry to the grounds to record a SHC match. Billy Winder had recorded many matches at the grounds and was asked by the St Mullins' club to record their SHC semi final clash with Naomh Brid; however, he was refused entry to Dr Cullen Park by County Board secretary Tommy O'Neill. The Carlow board secretary claimed that written permission is need to record matches and that Winder did not have authorization to do so, but the cameraman is convinced it is for another reason. Winder believes that the reason for not being allowed in was to do with a SFC game between Rathvilly and Kildavin-Clonegal that he recorded, but some nasty tackles and incidents were left out of the video, much to the county board's annoyance. "When there is a stoppage I stop the camera. They (County board) don't want the camera turned off. They are looking for me to do their job. There were seven officials and they didn't see it. The referee's report said nothing happened," said Winder. "They have barred me from doing any match in Carlow. They have picked on me. In 28 years I have never got written permission from either Wicklow or Carlow to do a match."
