St Mullins ended their involvement in the senior championship last Sunday when they were beaten by Naomh Brid in the county semi final.
This was the first of a double header of semi finals and St Mullins were wary of naomh Brid going into the game having lost to them earlier in the championship. Naomh Brid started better and were three points up after seven minutes. Paudie Kehoe opened the scoring for St Mullins with an excellent point from the sideline but Naomh Brid responded with another point straight away. Paudie Kehoe added another point which was also cancelled out just as quick.
Naomh Breid continued to pile pressure on the St Mullins defence which led to them winning a lot of frees in the first half. The half time score was 0-8 to 0-4 with the other St Mullins scores coming from a Paudie Kehoe free and Jack Kavanagh. Declan Murphy opened the scoring in the second half with a point but Naomh Brid responded yet again with another free. Patrick Walsh was introduced at half time and announced his arrival with a point after six minutes.
There were no more scores until Naomh Brid pointed another free midway through the half. Cian Doyle was sprung from the bench and finished to the net after receiving a lovely pass from Paudie Kehoe to put St Mullins within a point of Naomh Brid and a come back looked on. This was not to be however as Naomh Brid added two points in quick succession straight after the goal. It also proved not to be St Mullins' day when Paudie Kehoe had a penalty saved after Jack Kavanagh was pulled down in the square. The ensuing 65 was also missed which dented many peoples hopes of a come back.
To make defeat even more bitter Darren Whelan, who had been St Mullins' best performer by far, was red carded after the game for verbal abuse towards the referee. The final score was St Mullins 1-8 Naomh Brid 0-14. Team: Mark Ryan, Thomas Coady, Tom Doyle, Darren Whelan, John Doran, Paul Kehoe, Cathal Ryan, John Murphy, Michael Nolan, Shaun Gahan, James Coady, Declan Murphy 0-1, Paudie Kehoe 0-5(0-3 frees), Seamus Murphy, Jack Kavanagh 0-1. Subs: Pat Coady for Cathal Ryan, Patrick Walsh 0-1 for James Coady, Cian Doyle 1-0 for Shaun Gahan and Michael Kehoe for Michael Nolan.
The Under 21's are the only team now left in competition. They are due to play Ballinkillen in the first round of a knock out championship in the next two weeks.
The lights in the pitch have recently been upgraded and now light the field to a very high quality. Grass seeds have also been sown on the new pitch and will hopefully be in use for training next year. There will be a club meeting on Tuesday 14th October at 8pm.
