Call for floodlights in Dr Cullen Park

September 18, 2008
A backlog of matches has seen Carlow GAA fixtures secretary Martin Barry indicate that floodlights at Dr Cullen Park should be seriously considered. Carlow has a number of outstanding fixtures to be played, despite the GAA season drawing to a close and Barry feels that the only way this can be avoided in the future is to play midweek games under lights at Dr Cullen Park. "Up to last weekend we've played approximately 538 in Carlow and it annoys me when we're criticised," said Barry. "There were a number of factors outside our control which led all the games played in the last two months. "We were meant to be playing three rounds of the football and hurling championships before the county sides went out but we ended up playing just one round." Carlow hurlers run in the Christy Ring Cup, which they won, is the main reason for the fixtures backlog and Barry has called on the installation of flood lights. "My opinion is that we need flood lights in Dr Cullen Park. I know some people wouldn't agree with me but it's vital. It's been a logistics nightmare and clubs don't realise how many games there have been."
