Clubs blast fixture congestion

September 04, 2008
A recent meeting of the Carlow County Board saw a number of clubs protest over the fixture congestion that has resulted in a serious back log of games. The fact that there was little or no club games during the summer period as Carlow hurlers were involved in the Christy Ring Cup, while the footballers were in the Tommy Murphy Cup means that there are a huge amount of club games to get through yet. Mount Leinster Rangers' delegate Pat Hickey revealed that his club had to play seven matches in 21 days with many dual players being involved in all games. "As soon as the county board or whoever is involved says to these county managers of the hurling and football teams 'right lads we have to run our championships', the better. You look at Kilkenny or Cork and they can run it," said Hickey. "You pick up the Irish Examiner any Monday and look at the fixtures you'll see all the games in Cork and Kilkenny. They're ready to go into the quarterfinal after the All-Ireland final and have their final the same date as us."
