Eire Og’s Paul McElligott feels that last year’s experience of losing heavily in the Leinster club SFC championship drove them on this time around.

The Carlow champions emulated their hurling counterparts St Mullins by reaching the provincial decider, leaving the county with two teams battling for silverware, which is a remarkable achievement for a so called ‘weaker county’.

Eire Og impressed hugely in their comfortable win over Portlaoise in O’Moore Park last Saturday night as they booked their place in the final where they will face Ballyboden St Enda’s on Sunday week.

McElligott told the Carlow Nationalist that the pain of losing so heavily to Mullinalaghta in last year’s campaign certainly gave them motivation to push on this time around.

“We learned a lot from last year,” said McElligott. “We experienced something when we were on the back end of a bad defeat to Mullinalaghta.

“I can see how they (Portlaoise) are feeling and why they reacted like they did when things were going against them.”
