Carlow manager Turlough O'Brien believes it is time for the county to make the step up in the NFL.

The Barrowsiders and London are the only two counties not to have plied their trade in a higher division than Four in the National Football League.

It is a fact that O'Brien, his management team and players are keen to change during this 2018 campaign, but despite their good start to the campaign, the Carlow manager is adamant that they have a lot of work to do yet.

Three wins out of three sees them joint top of the division alongside Laois as they head into a weekend break and O'Brien told the Leitrim Observer that promotion is their main aim.

"I suppose we are the only team bar London that haven't been out of division four. Leitrim has been out there. We are looking for one of those things that does it for Carlow. We have a lot of good footballers. We have a lot of good clubs. It is frustrating to be in the bottom division - the basement division - year in, year out," said O'Brien.

"We want to get out of Division Four. We are on our own with this team for a while now. They have matured nicely now. There is a great togetherness in the team. The whole county is behind the team as well.

"There are a lot of good things happening in Carlow at the moment. We have a fantastic Centre of Excellence and we are tied up with IT Carlow as well. There are a lot of pieces of the jigsaw falling into place for us."
