Downey not looking past Tipp clash
May 02, 2008
After managing her side to league glory for the first time in 15 years, Kilkenny camogie manager Ann Downey has stated that her side will not be getting too ahead of themselves before their opening Championship encounter with Tipperary on June 1.
The Cats defeated Galway on a score-line of 3-11 to 0-17 last Saturday evening in what was an exciting victory for the Leinster side.
"We had always hoped to do well this year," admitted Downey
"Winning the League is a good start, but it means that every team we face is going to step up to the mark against Kilkenny and may be watching what we do, but we'll concentrate on our own game."
Downey, a former All-Ireland winning captain with her native Kilkenny county, is adamant that despite a promising league campaign, her side must keep their focus on what they plan to do in the coming months, and not the opposition.
"We'll tip away and do our own thing," said the Cats' manager.
"There's no point in worrying about the opposition - we didn't with Galway or any of the other sides we faced in the League. If we get our own game right and play as a unit on the day then we can play as good as what's out there."
Kilkenny face a Tipperary side who, along with Cork, have been dominant in the sport over the last decade.
"It's time to get our heads down now," stressed Downey.
"We're playing Tipp in the first round of the Championship in June. We're not looking beyond that."
