Derry denied by determined Clare

Derry Camogie News National Camogie League Division 2 Final Clare 4-8 Derry 3-9 Despite their valiant attempts to bring home the National League Division 2 title, the Derry girls lost out to a tenacious Clare side on Saturday. Derry were up for this game after last year's disappointment in Division 3 but Clare were first out of the blocks. Clare had notched up 1-3 before Derry got their first score, with a point from Aileen Laverty after 15 minutes. Further points from Clare McNicholl, Sinead Cassidy and Laverty again closed the gap. A goal from Maeve McGoldrick before half-time left the scores at 2-6 to 1-5 in Clare's favour. Derry battled hard for every ball after the break and were making good progress with another upset on the cards. Two late goals from full-forward Oonagh Mullan left 2 points between the teams. Derry had their chances but the luck deserted them and Clare held on for an historic win. The Derry contingent will be disappointed not to have gone the whole way but this was a fine team performance, particularly in the second half. The Intermediate Championship is there for the taking this season and no doubt managers Pádraig Ó Mianáin and Susan Uí Mhianáin will refocus the squad on the job ahead. Derry Scorers: Oonagh Mullan (2-0), Maeve McGoldrick (1-0), Aileen Laverty (0-3, 1 free, 1 45), Sinead Cassidy and Grainne McGoldrick (0-2 each) Clare McNicholl and Katie McAuley (0-1 each) Derry: Clare O'Kane (Capt); Kate Laverty, Sinead McKeever, Jane Carey, Ceara Cushnahan, Adele Henry, Clare McNicholl, Grainne McGoldrick, Briege Convery, Katie McAuley, Aisling Diamond, Aileen Laverty, Sinead Cassidy, Oonagh Mullan, Maeve McGoldrick. Subs. Attracta McPeake for Aileen Laverty, Aileen Laverty for Oonagh Mullan. Feile finalists emerge Bellaghy v Swatragh - Thurs 1st May, Swatragh. The 2008 Derry Feile will culminate with an eagerly awaited final tie between Swatragh and Bellaghy this Thursday evening. The game will be played before the Swatragh-Bellaghy senior league game in Swatragh. Swatragh defeated holders Ballinascreen in a tight game in Slaughtneil on Friday evening while at Kilrea, Bellaghy were impressive against a young Magherafelt side. Swatragh will be favourites for the title but cannot be complacent against the up and coming Wolfe Tones. Ulster Feile The Ulster Camogie Feile takes place this Saturday in Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone, with games being played at a number of different venues: Edendork, Ballinderry, Brockagh, Clonoe, Coalisland, Eglish, Moortown, Tattyreagh, Gortin and Brackaville.
