Cavan camogie celebrated Ulster U-14 and U-16 victories
Cavan Camogie Board celebrated their recent Ulster U-14 and U-16 wins recently. Never before has Cavan won U-14 and U-16 Ulster titles in succession needless to say the mood was one of celebration. Back in 2006 Cavan registered with Cumann Camogaiochta na nGael in Croke Park to be part of the new U-14 Development Squad initiative which they were putting in place.
A panel of 33 girls were selected and a nine week training programme was put in place under the guidance of Marie Brady, Marie Collins and Michelle Dunne.
Such was the commitment of the girls that their mentors deci-ded to continue on with this training initiative and from this panel an U-14 County squad was formed in March 2007.
This Cavan squad's first competitive outing was to an Ulster Development Blitz in Owenbeg in Derry on 18th August 2007.
Cavan competed against Donegal, Tyrone, Derry B, and Monaghan and beat Monaghan in a thrilling final.
The Cavan girls who would have faced this blitz as complete underdogs came home with the shield.
With increasing confidence these Cavan U-14's started their Ulster Championship campaign and reached the semi-final to play Monaghan.
The Cavan girls won this game after a tough encounter. Cavan won the toss for a home venue in the final.
Cavan's skill and determination against Tyrone in Drumlane, cheered on by a large Cavan contingent, saw Cavan win impressively.
With quite a number of these girls now no longer U-14 and the interest in training a playing together still there, their management team decided to enter an U-16 Cavan team for 2008.
The Ulster competition starts in March and Cavan again very much the underdogs reached the Ulster U16 Final on Saturday 17th March 2008.
Cavan went to Keady to play Armagh with great enthusiasm but also trepidation as Armagh are seen as one of the kingpins of Ulster camogie.
However on the day Cavan's grit and determination not to be outplayed or undermined won through and Cavan won by 7 points with a scoreline of 4-7 to 3-3. The squad, their mentors and parents were jubilant.
Cavan are still out there training hard with their next competitive outing an All- Ireland Blitz on July 25th.
