McDonnell to consider future
August 21, 2008
Steven McDonnell is to decide if he will return to the Orchard County setup on the basis of whether or not he thinks Armagh can win another All-Ireland title.
This year saw the ace attacker pick up his seventh Ulster title in a decade, but miss out on All-Ireland glory once more after Peter McDonnell's men were caught out by Wexford in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals.
Now McDonnell says that his sole aim before he hangs up his boots is to lift a second Sam Maguire Cup, but admits that he won't return to inter-county football if he doesn't think it is in the Armagh squad to do it.
"I'd love to go back because my goal is to win another All-Ireland, but we've no change to our brand of football to get near that target.
"It's early days. I'll take time to decide whether to go back.
"There's a part of me that wants to enjoy football with my club while I can, so I'll not make any decision until I talk to Peter McDonnell.
"I love wearing the jersey, but if I didn't think we had the players to win an All-Ireland, I wouldn't go back.
"I believe we have the players to achieve that. My aim is not to win another Ulster title or league, it's to win another All-Ireland."
All-time Ulster top-scorer Oisin McConville retired from inter-county football after the defeat to the Model County, and the fear around the Orchard County is that some of the old heads may follow suit, with McDonnell among the veterans.
