Relegation comes to the fore in Division One

July 31, 2008
This weekend's round of games in Division One of the all-county football league includes some key relegation contests. Sixth-placed Dromintee and seventh-placed Killeavy both look safe enough following recent improvements in form, so their meeting isn't perhaps as vital as some of the others. But the winners will be totally safe in the ten-team section. Second-from-bottom Armagh Harps need to win their local derby against Pearse Og, as they are two points away from their nearest rivals Mullaghbawn with only three games remaining. Mullaghbawn have the thankless task of travelling to fierce rivals Crossmaglen, who have long since been crowned Division One winners. Propping up the table, four points adrift of Harps, Maghery need to win at least three of their remaining four matches. They travel to Cullyhanna to face St Patrick's on Sunday afternoon, knowing that a win could throw them a lifeline. The top two come face to face in Division Two. Sarsfields (with 25 points from 16 outings) know that a home win over Carrickcruppen (21 from 16) would effectively see them take the Division Two title. But the league leaders could be distracted by the not-so-small matter of their IFC replay against An Port Mor at Ballyhegan on Friday night.
