Ring Cup: Meath and Armagh stave off relegation
July 26, 2008
Meath and Armagh preserved their Christy Ring Cup status by virtue of their relegation play-off wins over Roscommon and London on Saturday.
A brace of second half goals from Ger O'Neill helped the Royals to a comfortable 3-19 to 3-6 victory over Roscommon at Cusack Park, Mullingar. Nicky Horan gave the winners a dream start with a goal inside two minutes and although Tom Reddington replied with a similar score, Roscommon trailed by 1-6 to 1-11 at half-time.
The Connacht side rallied early in the second half with a Mervyn Connaughton goal cutting the gap to the minimum after 45 minutes. But O'Neill, who shot 2-4, steered Meath to victory.
Roscommon will meet London in the play-off decider after the Exiles succumbed to a second half comeback by 14-man Armagh at Newry. Despite the dismissal of Paddy McArdle in the 30th minute, Mattie Lennon's Orchardmen rallied after the half-time to prevail on a 0-15 to 1-9 scoreline.
London led by 1-5 to 0-6 at half-time thanks to Tom Abernathy's goal in the opening minute, but Armagh dug deep in the second half with strong displays from Brian McCormack and Ger Enright, who scored 0-8, giving them the win.
