Football quarter-finals won't be provincial repeats

July 25, 2008
The GAA have moved to clarify that provincial champions will not be allowed to meet the teams they beat in their respective finals when the draws for the All-Ireland football quarter-finals are made. So far all the rounds of the football qualifiers have been based on open draws with teams allowed to meet sides they have already played in the championship. So far there have been no repeat meetings this year, but the possibility exists for a repeat meeting in the third round if Armagh were to face Down or Fermanagh to take on Donegal. However, the GAA have confirmed that when the draws for the All-Ireland quarter-finals are made, the four provincial champions will not be allowed to meet the sides they defeated in their provincial deciders. If the four beaten provincial finalists were all successful in round 3 of the qualifiers, in the All-Ireland quarter-finals Wexford could not meet Dublin, Kerry could not meet Cork, Mayo could not face Galway and a repeat clash between Fermanagh and Armagh would not be permitted. The four provincial champions will be drawn against the round 3 qualifier winners in the quarter finals to be played on the weekend of 9/10 August.
