U-16 Ladies Football

Thomas Davis 0-7   V   Saval 3-5        Thursday 25th September

On Thursday evening a large crowd of parents and interested spectators gathered at the Corrinshego pitch for an Under-16 Ladies Football challenge match between Thomas Davis and County Down side Saval. Moreover this was to be the last game to be played on the 'small field' as we move over to our new development in early 2015.

Thomas Davis GFC Under 16 LadiesFrom the start it was both competitive and fast-moving with Toni Finnegan playing a stormer at half-back.  With Millie Kinney pulling off some great saves and the midfield partnership of Leah Mc Loughlin and Laura Debrowska battling hard at midfield with Leah chipping in with a fine point  to leave the scores at 0-1 a piece at half-time.   The second half started with Saval on the attack and a blistering shot from the Saval captain was well saved by Millie Kinney.  A great ball by Aoife Millar, found Siobhan McKinley who's effort was unlucky to come off the up-right and lead to a Saval attack which found the Saval full-forward. Unfortunately for Corrinshego she was up-ended and duly scored a fine goal from the penalty spot. To their credit the Newry girls took the game to their more illustrious opponents, with Aoife Millar, Danielle McClorey with 0-4 and a fine point from Nicole McCann .  Aime Lee Mc Shane and Lilly Cory battled hard in the full-back line, while in the half-forwards Aine Mc Quillan  and Colleen Loye fought for every ball.  Although Saval were the better team the final score of 3-5 to 0-7 flattered the 'visitors' who  have reached the Down County 'A' U-16 Final. This was an extremely encouraging display by the Corrinshego girls and their mentors.

Thomas Davis Captain Danielle McClorey & Saval Captain Leanne Fearon along with Match Referee David O'Brien. When the referee blew the final whistle, it wasn't just the end of a match or a ladies fixture, but the end of an era.  For those in the club with long memories it was nostalgic to think that this was the last football game to be played on this small pitch off the Chancellor's Road on the edge of West Newry. For people like Teddy Trainor and Liam Mullen who remember fundraising and purchasing the field, Frank Harvey who  was the underage mentor for many a long year, to all the underage coaches, players, mentors and parents, this was the small field which played host to our underage fixtures from 1982 to the present day, from Culloville and Crossmaglen in the south to the Lurgan Clubs in the north, the small Corrinshego  field played host to many memorable battles, some lost and some won,  but When Chairman Anthony Havern  turned off the floodlights last Thursday evening  that era will be confined to the history book as we embark on our new exciting challenge of  a new full-sized field of our own. We will never forget the small Corrinshego field, especially when we had to retrieve the ball from  the back ditch, but in reality we are growing as a club, we are expanding and the small field doesn't meet the requirements of either a 21st  Century  sports facility or for our  ever-expanding underage teams and players.  Caithfear slán a fhágáil ag an sheanpháirc ar an chrosbhealaí agus ar aghaidh le chéile chuig an chéad chéim eile sa stair an chumann s'againne.
