Ulster U21HC: Armagh bridge 31-year gap
July 22, 2010
Armagh qualified for their first Bord Gais Energy Ulster U21HC final since 1979 when they ran out comfortable winners over Derry at a rain-lashed Casment Park last night.
Armagh 2-12
Derry 0-10
The victory is another huge boost for Armagh hurling after the county's recent Nicky Rackard Cup success.
The Orchard County laid the foundations for their victory in the first half when they built up a 2-6 to 0-2 half-time lead against a disappointing Derry team who didn't score until the 15th minute. By then, Armagh already had five points on the board thanks to three Kieran McKiernan frees and efforts from David Carville and Conor Coulter.
Coulter - who finished with 1-5 from play - and Michael Lennon both found the net before half-time to effectively end the tie as a contest.
Martin Moan, Martin Maguire, Conor Corvan and Coulter all added points after the break and despite the best efforts of free-taker Patrick Henry, there was no way back for the Oak Leafers.
