Rackard Cup roundup
June 13, 2010
Armagh, Fingal, Sligo and Roscommon all enjoyed wins in yesterday's Nicky Rackard Cup action.
Armagh needed extra-time to get the better of London by 4-26 to 2-23 at Crossmaglen. The Exiles, who were due to line out again today in the Ulster semi-final against Down, led by three points as injury-time approached, but Fiachra Bradley scored a last-gasp equalising goal to force extra-time and the home side went on to dominate the additional period.
John Reddan and Matt Fitzsimons were the London goalscorers, while the Armagh goals were scored by Paul McCormack, Bradley and John Corvan (two).
Dublin outfit Fingal were comfortable 1-18 to 2-9 victors over 14-man Tyrone at Lawless Park. The Red Hands suffered a huge blow after just four minutes when their midfielder Justin Kelly was sent off, but they were two points to the good after Conor Grogan's goal in the 21st minute. However, a scrambled goal from corner forward Brian McCarthy just before the break saw Fingal lead by 1-9 to 1-6 at half-time.
With Paul McAllister and Colm Foley impressing at midfield and wing forward respectively, Fingal took control in the second half with Tyrone's second goal coming in stoppage-time.
Sligo secured their first win of the campaign when late goals from Damian Burke and Cian Hackett saw them overcome Monaghan by 3-10 to 0-13 at Markievicz Park. Michael Hughes slotted over six frees in the opening half to help the visitors to a 0-7 to 0-4 interval lead, but a 53rd minute Colin Herity goal from a 20-metre free had brought Sligo back into it before Burke and Hackett stuck late to give the home side the win.
Seamus Qualter's Roscommon booked their semi-final place courtesy of a 0-17 to 1-8 victory over Louth in Dundalk.
The Connacht side laid the foundations for their win in the first half when they scored 12 points without reply with David Dolan and Niall Kilroy leading the charge. Louth had to wait until the 30th minute for their opening score - a goal from Diarmuid Murphy.
Trailing by 1-2 to 0-14 at the interval, the home side got to within four points of their hosts late on, but two late frees from Dolan ensure Roscommon held on as Louth finished the match with 14 players following Mark Wallace's sending off in injury-time.
