Vernon: It's win at all costs
June 06, 2010
Charlie Vernon says he doesn't mind what sort of a spectacle today's Ulster SFC quarter-final against Monaghan is as long as Armagh win.
Both teams have been involved in some poor championship games in recent years and many people are expecting tomorrow's clash to be another war of attrition. But Vernon says Armagh will make no apology if the game is another dour affair.
"When you go out in the championship, it's nearly win at all costs," the midfield said.
"You have to learn to win dirty and win nice because you get no thanks coming home having playing lovely football and getting beaten by a point. At the end of the day, if you're lifting Sam in September nobody will fault you for it."
Vernon feels the NFL Division 2 champions have a point to prove after last year's short-lived championship campaign.
"Before Derry (in the preliminary round), the last two championship outings we had we were beaten in. That's hard thing to take from an Armagh perspective.
"There's always high enough expectations in Armagh and we put a lot of time and effort in at all levels, from administration level right down, so when you get a victory it's sweet.
"Monaghan turned us over last year after extra-time in the qualifiers and they know us inside out. They have a tight defence, a good midfield and a few nippy forwards, so we know how tough it's going to be."
