Marsden 'sick' of sweeper system

Former Armagh star Diarmuid Marsden
Former Armagh attacker Diarmuid Marsden has blasted the sweeper system which has been all the rage in this year's Ulster SFC.

"The more teams that can get past the sweeper system the better as far as I am concerned. I am sick of this sweeper system," Marsden said in the Irish News.

"I suppose that's from a forward's point of view, but what I think about it is also from a spectator's point of view. Who wants to see teams just kicking the ball in and being swarmed up with players? You want to see open, attacking football played and that is what I'd like to see more of."

The 2002 All-Ireland winner isn't ruling out extra-time in Sunday's Ulster SFC quarter-final between Armagh and Monaghan.

"You just never know, it could be a war of attrition. It could come right down to the wire. That's championship football, what it is all about, and teams just want to get over the finishing line.

"I think it will be a fiercely intense battle. The way the two teams are set, they like to play a physical game and they like to get stuck in, in a hard but fair way, and that will be enthralling for supporters to watch.

"I can see it going right down to the wire. It will be very close to call and I certainly could not rule extra-time out. Monaghan are coming in under the radar a wee bit."
