Allianz NFL heads for crucial series

March 16, 2010
The picture regarding places in the finals, promotion and relegation won't be decided next weekend but it will become somewhat clearer as the top three Divisions play Round 5 while it's round six in Division 4.

All four divisions are proving as competitive as anticipated and are certain to remain so over the coming weeks as the competition heads towards a climax.

Dublin, Antrim and Clare are the only counties on 100 per cent records while at the bottom end of the scale Westmeath, Roscommon and Kilkenny are the only teams still without a point.

On TV..
Saturday: Cork v Dublin (Setanta Ireland), 7.30; Down v Armagh (Setanta 1), 7.30.
Sunday: Galway v Tyrone (TG 4 deferred - 4.0 approx)

DIVISION 1: DUBLIN SURGE ON AT FULL POWER
Saturday (7.30): Cork v Dublin, Pairc Ui Rinn (Live on Setanta Ireland).
Sunday (2.30): Galway v Tyrone, Tuam Stadium (Deferred on TG4); Monaghan v Derry, Scotstown; Kerry v Mayo, Tralee.
A year ago, Dublin had won only one of their first four games and were in relegation trouble but it's all very different this time as they top the table on full points as they head for Pairc Ui Rinn to take on Cork, whose unbeaten run ended against Tyrone last Saturday. Dublin have the best defensive record in the group, having conceded an average of just under 11 points per game in their wins over Kerry, Derry, Mayo and Monaghan. Cork, in contrast, have conceded an average of 2-12 per game but have beaten Monaghan, Kerry and Galway while losing to Tyrone.

Mayo take a record of three wins from four games to Tralee to tackle Kerry who got back to winning ways after losing their first two games to Dublin and Cork. They have since beaten Derry and Galway. Relegation is very much a worry for the remaining four which makes Galway v Tyrone and Monaghan v Derry extremely important. The losers will be in real trouble on just two points from five games.
Last year: Cork v Dublin - didn't meet; Galway 0-10 Tyrone 0-8; Kerry 0-13 Mayo 0-11; Derry 1-10 Monaghan 0-10 (Ulster SFC); Derry 3-16 Monaghan 0-20 (All-Ireland qualifiers)

DIVISION 2: TOP TWO CLASH IN NEWRY
Saturday (7.30): Down v Armagh, Newry (Live on Setanta 1); Meath v Laois, Navan; Tipperary v Donegal, Thurles.
Sunday (2.30): Kildare v Westmeath, Newbridge.
A huge crowd is expected in Pairc Esler, Newry on Saturday night for the top-of-the-table clash between Down (7pts) against Armagh (6pts). To add to the intrigue, former Down captain and manager, Paddy O'Rourke is now in charge of Armagh while Down are in the capable hands of O'Rourke's former colleague, James McCartan.
It's very tight behind the top two with Donegal, Kildare, Meath and Laois all on four points and Tipperary on three points. Westmeath are now in serious trouble and will be odds-on to drop to Division 3 if they fail to beat Kildare in Newbridge. Westmeath were in Division 1 last year but after failing to win any game in that group they have now lost their first four outings in Division 2.
Last year: Down v Armagh - didn't meet; Meath 1-8 Laois 0-6; Tipperary v Donegal - didn't meet; Kildare v Westmeath - didn't meet.

DIVISION 3: ANTRIM STILL UNBEATEN IN TIGHT GROUP
Sunday (2.30): Wexford v Fermanagh, Wexford Park; Offaly v Antrim, Tullamore; Louth v Roscommon, Drogheda; Sligo v Cavan, Markievicz Park.
Antrim's rise up the rankings continue as they now stand at the top of the table with four wins from four games which sees them two clear of Louth. Cavan, Offaly, Wexford and Offaly are all on four points so clearly this Division still has a lot of twists and turns ahead. Fermanagh, who dropped from Division 2 last year, are in danger of being relegated again after losing three of four while Roscommon are in even deeper trouble, having lost all four so far.
Last year: Wexford 0-16 Fermanagh 2-10 (Div 2); Offaly v Antrim - didn't meet; Roscommon 0-13 Louth 0-10; Sligo v Cavan - didn't meet.

DIVISION 4: THREE POINTS SEPARATE TOP FIVE
Sunday (2.30): Leitrim v London, Carrick-on-Shannon; Kilkenny v Longford, Freshford; Wicklow v Limerick, Aughrim; Clare v Carlow, Ennis.
The scramble for the two promotion places is hotting up with only three points separating the top five. Clare have the edge, however, as they have full points from four games whereas Wicklow and Limerick have lost one game each while Waterford have drawn two and won three. Carlow have won two, lost two and drawn one of five games.
Last year: Leitrim 2-12 London 2-7; Kilkenny v Longford - didn't meet; Wicklow v Limerick - didn't meet; Clare 0-12 Carlow 0-10.
