McDonnell tipped for Armagh captaincy

Armagh’s Stephen McDonnell strikes
18 December 2009

New Armagh manager Paddy O'Rourke is expected to confirm Steven McDonnell as his captain for the 2010 campaign.

As one of the leading forwards of his generation, the Killeavy clubman would undoubtedly be a popular choice with Armagh players and supporters alike. O'Rourke has little option but to appoint a new captain as 2009 skipper Ciaran McKeever is expected to be out until March at the earliest after suffering a serious leg injury in Ulster's Inter-provincial final victory over Munster in Ruislip last month.

McDonnell, who kicked the winning point in the Orchard County's historic All-Ireland triumph over Kerry in 2002, could captain the team for the first time in the McKenna Cup opener against Fermanagh at Crossmaglen on January 10.
