St. Ronan's Hogan Cup celebrations on Saturday were tempered by an arson attack on the site of a planned new building for the Lurgan school.

The attack happened just hours after St. Ronan's had beaten Rice College of Westport by 1-10 to 1-9 at Croke Park. The fire, which broke out at a line of prefab classrooms away from the main school building, was brought under control by a unit of Portadown Fire Station.

"It was a small fire for us and we put it out quite quickly, but our concern is that it's an unsecured site and the main school is empty, so the potential for the whole thing to go is quite high now," Portadown Fire Station commander Jed Anderson told the Irish News.

"We hope it gets knocked down as soon as possible as it could have been a lot worse."

Upper Bann SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly described the attack at the site of the former St. Michael's Grammar School as "wanton vandalism".

Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
