Good news on the Antrim football front

June 14, 2006
There was good news on the football front for Antrim last weekend as their minor footballers reached the provincial decider by dethroning reigning Ulster champions, Armagh in a thrilling finish at St. Tiarnach's Park, Clones on Sunday 11th June. The Saffrons side now await the winners of Sunday's second semi-final between Tyrone and Donegal which takes place also at the Clones venue. Antrim minor side showed plenty of talent and battling qualities to overcome Armagh in a game that seemed to be going away from them at times. However, they were very resiliant and never lacked confidence which came through in the end. They are now deservedly through to the provincial decider, and it would be great for gaelic football in the county if they could win their first title at this level since 1982. They will go into the provincial decider as underdogs, but that won't unduly worry them. However, they will have to improve in areas of their team if they are to overcome either Tyrone or Donegal who both have shown excellent form to date in the competition. What a fairytale ending to the Ulster championship campaign if Antrim can overcome the odds. The side plays with a lot of confidence, and remembering that in any final it all depends on which team performs to their true ability on the day!
