U21s - Intermediate County Champions

Another mighty performance from our U21s on Sunday afternoon saw them lift the Intermediate County Championship title with a narrow one point win over Clann Eireann, 2 - 9 to 0 - 14.

The Shanes made a dream start to the game with team captain Greg McCabe netting in the opening minutes. However, Clann Eireann completely dominated the next twenty minutes of the game, firing over eight points on the trot to lead by five but the Shanes didn't panic and two long range frees from Connaire Mackin cut the deficit to three. It was the Shanes turn to dominate now and further points from the McCabe brothers, Mark and Greg, had the Shanes back to within one and they could easily have gone ahead minutes later but the Clann Eireann keeper made a tremendous stop to deny Mark McCabe. The sides swapped points in the minutes leading up to half-time with Connaire Mackin on target again with another free and the sides went into the break with Clann Eireann leading by one, 0 - 9 to 1 - 5.

Both sides missed chances early in the second-half before Greg McCabe rose highest on the edge of the square to fist the ball to the Clann Eireann net for his and his side's second goal of the game and Shanes now led by two. However, just like the first-half, Clann Eireann hit a bit of a purple patch and they notched up the next three points to edge ahead again by one only for James Robinson to tie the game again with a well taken point. The game was flowing from end to end now and a Ryan Byrne point put the Shanes back in front only for Clann Eireann to level almost immediately. A fantastic long range effort from Connaire Mackin from right out on the side-line crept over the bar and the Shanes led by one again but in keeping with the level of play from both sets of players Clann Eireann replied once more and the teams were level again as the game entered its last minutes. It was going to take something special to separate the two teams and so it proved when Oisín Murphy jinked his way past a couple of Clann Eireann defenders before slotting the ball just inside the right hand post and putting the Shanes back in front again. Clann Eireann did manage to mount one more attack but the Shanes defence, not for the first time, stood firm and turned the ball over allowing the referee blow the final whistle and see the Shanes crowned Intermediate champions on a score-line of 2 - 9 to 0 - 14.

The victory was nothing more than these set of players and their management team deserved. They have worked tirelessly over the past number of weeks to ensure that they gave themselves the best chance to pick-up the silverware and it paid off on Sunday. On behalf of everyone at the club I would to congratulate all the players and their managers, Mick Mackin and David Muckian, on a tremendous achievement and a brilliant end to the year.
