'Sambo': we need to sort county board first

Antrim's Terence "Sambo" McNaughton.

Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton says putting a county board with "energy and vision" in place should be a bigger priority for Antrim than appointing a new hurling manager.

Speaking to the Irish News after Kevin Ryan announced his intention to step down as senior and U21 hurling boss, the Antrim and Cushendall legend said: "To me, the most important decision ahead of Antrim over the next few months is sorting out the county board, moreso than the county manager's position.

"If you have the right county board in place, they'll find the right manager.

"[But] there is so much apathy in the county. Clubs don't care anymore. The clubs need to take ownership of the county. The next manager can only work with what's there. It's up to the county board to determine where this county goes.

"We need to get the foundations right. You have to get that right first, you need to support the manager and a county board with a vision that knows what it's doing.

"We need somebody with energy to bring the county forward."
