New Antrim football manager Frank Fitzsimons has secured the services of top physical trainer Mike McGurn for the coming season.

The Fermanagh native, who is based in Queen's University, has worked as a strength and conditioning coach with the Irish rugby and International Rules teams, as well as Premier League clubs Everton and Hull. McGurn has also trained the Osprey's and St. Helen's rugby union and league teams, and was involved with the Armagh footballers a couple of years ago.

"It is absolutely fantastic for us to get someone with Mike's track record on board," an excited Fitzsimons told the Irish News.

"Myself and Sean McKenna (selector) would know Mike quite well. He has done bits and pieces with a few of the clubs over the years and our paths crossed through coaching. I just popped the question to him one day and I got the answer I was looking for.

"Mike expects everything to be done to perfection and that mentality will help Antrim football. We will just have to heed everything he says and if we do that I am confident he will get that extra 10 per cent from the players.

"He worked with big Anthony Tohill on the International Rules teams. He worked with the Ireland rugby team and took the Ospreys, Hull and Everton as well. The list goes on and on. To get him with a massive coup for Antrim football."
