Sigerson Cup: Newman the hero for Maynooth
February 02, 2012
Meath's Michael Newman scored a last-minute winner as NUI Maynooth booked their place in the last eight of the Irish Daily Mail Sigerson Cup at Queen's expense in Belfast yesterday.
NUI Maynooth 0-13
Queen's University 1-9
The win will have delighted Maynooth manager John Divilly, especially after they trailed 0-1 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Kildare outfit then hit three unanswered points to take the lead, but Queen's replied with a goal from Tyrone's Niall McKenna to take a 1-5 to 0-5 advantage into the break.
The visitors levelled on the restart through points from Newman, Paul Calahane and James Califf before Cian Mullins edged back in front after 46 minutes. When McKenna tied up the scoring again in the 61st minutes, extra-time looked to be on the cards, but Kilmainham clubman's Newman's fourth point won it for Maynooth.
