McKenna Cup: Neeson snatches win for Saffrons

January 19, 2012
Antrim 2-12
Queen's 1-14

Brian Neeson's late goal handed Antrim a dramatic victory over Queen's University in this dead-rubber McKenna Cup Group A final round tie last night.

Despite there being little at stake, the small crowd was treated to a lively affair. Antrim opened up an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead thanks to points from Paddy Cunningham (two) and Tomas McCann, but Donal O'Hare's accuracy from placed balls had the students level by the eighth minute. O'Hare was the best player on view and finished the game with a personal tally of 1-8 (1-1 from play).

The sides were level a further six times in the first half , but a stunning James Loughrey goal two minutes after the restart had the Saffrons in front again. Burren man O'Hare responded with a similar score at the other end and it looked like Queen's would prevail until Neeson palmed the ball to the net after Tony Scullion had fisted invitingly across goal.
