Fitzgibbon: UUJ students get a lesson
February 16, 2010
University of Limerick proved much too strong (3-18 to 3-7) a combination for UUJ in their Ulster Bank Fitzgibbon Cup clash in Monasterevin.
The Shannonsiders hit the ground running and never looked back with wing forward Noel O Murchadha firing over a brace of points.
UUJ remained on the backfoot as the first half gathered pace and goals from Matt Ruth and Offaly ace Shane Dooley left them sitting handsomely in front.
Dooley followed up with a brilliant point from way out while David Burke helped himself to a fine 1-5 tally in the second half.
To their credit, the Ulster side never gave up the ghost with goalkeeper Chris O'Connell in particularly defiant form.
The UUJ netminder produced two great saves from Dooley while at the other end of the field, the accuracy of Neil McManus kept them in the game at other times.
By dint of their win, the Limerick lads will now meet UCC in a mouth-watering quarter-final tie.
