Aussies target McCann

November 13, 2008
Antrim's Thomas McCann is the latest rising GAA star to be targeted by Aussie Rules clubs. The 21-year-old Cargin forward made an impression on AFL agent Ricky Nixon when he held trials in Castlebar during the summer, and will be flown to Australia next March where Geelong are understood to be one of the clubs interested in signing him. The pacy UUJ student was one of the stars of Antrim's Tommy Murphy Cup final victory over Wicklow at Croke Park last August, and was in action for the Jordanstown side in their Ryan Cup quarter-final victory over DIT yesterday. But McCann said he would be prepared to drop his academic studies and Gaelic football career if he received the right offer from an AFL club. When asked if he was genuinely interested in moving to Australia, he said: "I would surely. I probably would go. It's one of those things which you might never get the chance to do again." News of McCann's possible departure to the AFL comes after GAA president Nickey Brennan admitted that there is very little that can be done to stop young GAA stars from trying their hand at Aussie Rules.
