Kernan lashes out at timing of competition
October 27, 2008
Ulster manager Joe Kernan has criticised the timing of the inter-provincial competition as he saw his charges eliminated in the semi final by Munster at a wind swept Fermoy on Saturday evening.
With the cream of Irish football in Australia playing in the compromise rules series, Kernan still managed to assemble a strong squad for the competition, but having seen a scrappy game that has was dominated by the weather, the former Armagh manager has called on a different date to be introduced.
"We've gone back 100 years here," he said. "Our boys have shown a big interest in taking part in this competition. When they show this hunger, why not give it a go? The venue and timing doesn't suit this competition.
"Put them with the All-Ireland club finals, the two hurling games in Thurles and the two football games in Croke Park. Give it a go for two years, anyway."
A goal by Cork midfielder Nicholas Murphy proved decisive as Munster ran out winners by three points in a low scoring encounter on front of a small crowd.
