Ulster Club SHC: Cushendall hold on to grab title
October 20, 2008
Cushendall 1-14
Ballygalget 1-13
Conor McCambridge's first half-goal proved crucial for Cushendall as they just edged out Down champions Ballygalget by the minimum at Casement Park on Sunday in the AIB Ulster Club SHC final.
Assisted by a strong wind in the opening 30 minutes, the Antrim outfit were thankful of their sharp corner-forward's goal on the quarter that gave them a half-time lead of 1-8 to 0-8.
The Mourne men stayed in touch with the winners right throughout the second-half thanks to Marin Og Coulter's frees, which registered eight points in all for the John Mitchel's side.
However, it was another Coulter, Paddy, who would spring the biggest shock on the Saffron champions when he raced through their defence to smash home a goal on 61 minutes, putting the scores at 1-14 to 1-12.
Steven Clarke sent over moments later to make it a one-point game as things began to get nervy for Cushendall, but the Antrim champs just held out in the little time remaining to claim the provincial crown.
