Football championship draws

Sam Maguire and why was the All Ireland football trophy called after him
All-Ireland winners Tyrone will face Ulster champions Armagh in the first round of the championship while Dublin take on Meath in the Leinster after the provincial football draws took place in Croke Park. That meeting of Ulster's big two is the stand out game of the draws with one of the northern big hitters set for an early entry into the qualifiers. The winner of that game will play either Derry or Monaghan, who meet in a quarter-final tie. Elsewhere, Down are in the preliminary round for the fourth successive year and will take on Fermanagh, with the winners to face Tommy Carr's Cavan. Donegal play Antrim in the remaining quarter-final meeting. Munster reverted to an open draw and if Cork can overcome an up and coming Waterford they will play Kerry in the semi-final. That means that the other three sides in the province will battle it out for a final place, with Tipperary facing Limerick in a quarter-final tie and the winners taking on Clare. The big draw in Leinster football is a quarter-final pairing of Dublin and Meath, both of whom are without a manager at the moment. Beaten Leinster finalists Wexford will face either Kildare or Offaly in the quarter-finals, while Laois will pair up to either Carlow or Louth. The remaining quarter-final clash will see Westmeath take on either Longford, who they have met three times in the last two years, or Mick O'Dwyer's Wicklow. In the Connacht championship this year's winners Galway commence away to London before facing an expected semi-final against Sligo, a repeat of the 2007 provincial decider, which Sligo sensationally won. Mayo travel to New York and the winners of that game will face either Roscommon or Leitrim.
