Olaf's star has Louth roots
November 29, 2013
Bernard Gaughran, who will line out for St. Olaf's against Geraldines in Sunday's Leinster club IFC final, hails from a well-known Louth GAA family.
His father Benny was a star player with Clan na Gael, UCD, Civil Service and Louth during the 1960s and 1970s, and also played for Leinster in the Railway Cup. Benny won a Dublin SFC medal with UCD in 1973, something Bernard emulated in 1996 when he was part of St. Sylvester's winning side.
Fast forward 17 years and Bernard is still going strong in the colours of Naomh Olaf, who are based in Dundrum. Bernard's great grandfather, Laurence Soraghan, won a Louth SFC medal with the Gers in 1913, but he'll be out to stop them from becoming only the second Louth club - after O'Connells in 2003 - to win a Leinster club football title at Drogheda this weekend.
