Clooney-Quin overcome Broadford
May 18, 2010
Clooney-Quin 1-17
Broadford 1-8
In Group 1 Clooney-Quin got their senior championship campaign off to a flying start with a deserved nine-point victory over Broadford at Cusack Park on 15 May. The game was a feisty affair with both teams showing plenty of commitment amid the teeming rain in Ennis.
Clooney-Quin were first out of the traps with Martin Duggan and Fergal Lynch scoring inside four minutes. Broadford midfielder Craig Chaplin pointed a free to halve the deficit before a free and 65 from Derek Ryan extended Clooney's lead. Their fellow East Clare opponents needed to respond quickly to stop the game slipping away from them and Padraig Hickey's goal was just the tonic. Craig Chaplin knocked over three more points for the 2008 intermediate champions before half-time but Ryan did the same for Clooney and three unanswered points with the interval looming gave them the initiative and they led 0-10 to 1-4 at the break. It had been an intriguing first half with both teams putting in some full-blooded challenges.
Half-time seemed to come at the right time for Broadford but the break did little to interrupt Clooney-Quin's rhythm and they effectively sealed the win in the opening minutes of the second half. A pointed free and then a goal from Ryan put Clooney seven points in front and, in truth, Broadford never looked like recovering sufficiently, particularly with Clooney goalkeeper Cathal Hannon in fine form. Craig Chaplin knocked over another free to hint ever so slightly at a resurgence but further points from Duggan and Ryan put that notion to bed. Broadford substitute Declan Teefy helped himself to a couple of scores and Chaplin pointed again to put some respectability on the scoreboard but Clooney again finished stronger with John Earls, Duggan and a Ryan free closing out the game to give them a 1-17 to 1-8 victory.
