O'Meara fires Tipp into another final
July 18, 2008
A Mark O'Meara point three minutes into injury-time handed Tipperary a dramatic victory over Limerick in last night's Munster under 21 hurling semi-final at Semple Stadium.
Tipperary...1-13
Limerick..0-15
The teams were level on no fewer than six occasions and extra-time looked a certainty unitl O'Meara popped up with the winning score right at the death to break Limerick hearts. Tipp will now face the winners of next Monday's rescheduled clash between Cork and Clare in the final in a fortnight's time.
Ciaran Carey's well-drilled Limerick team deserved to take something from the game, having dominated for long periods, and Tipp were grateful to goalkeeper Matthew Ryan, defenders Padraig Maher and Thomas Stapleton for keeping the opposing attack at bay.
The accuracy of Pa Bourke - who top-scored with 0-9 (0-7 from frees) - also kept Tipp in the game but it was Shane Bourke's 18th minute goal that proved the decisive score. That score helped the Premier boys to a 1-8 to 0-8 interval lead and Limerick did not draw level again until the 58th minute when Graham Mulcahy pointed.
In a frenetic finish, Pa Bourke restored the home side's advantage, only for Sean Tobin to level again from a close-in free. However, a huge clearance from his own defence by Thomas Stapleton broke out to O'Meara and he fired between the posts to give Tipp the win.
