McGuinness opts out of Meath squad

April 15, 2008

Navan O'Mahonys and Meath's Cormac McGuinness
Up-and-coming Meath defender Cormac McGuinness has quit the county panel after failing to hold down a regular starting place in this year's NFL campaign. After being introduced for the Royals' opening round clash with Roscommon in Kiltoom, the Navan O'Mahony's clubman was handed a starting role for the defeat to Westmeath at Cusack Park. He was withdrawn near the end of that game and hasn't featured since. McGuinness looked set to have a long and successful career in the green and gold jersey after making an impressive debut against Tyrone in last year's All-Ireland quarter-final in the absence of the injured Eoghan Harrington, but 2008 has not panned out as he would have hoped and he becomes the third player to leave the panel in recent weeks, following in the footsteps of Niall McLoughlin and Charles McCarthy.
