Cork forfeit league points

February 19, 2008
The GAA have announced that Cork will forfeit the NFL and NHL points in the games they failed to field in, as well as suffering a per-match fine. Football games against Meath and Dublin as well as hurling ties versus Kilkenny and Waterford were postponed due to the ongoing players strike. The Rebels anticipated these games being refixed with the GAA already stating that March 9 could be the date for the refixed Meath NFL clash. However, the CCCC met today and decided that Cork should forfeit those games with their opponents awarded the points. Meath had already said they would not be facilitating a refixture and expected to be awarded the points, while Dublin were also known to be unhappy with the situation. Kilkenny indicated they were willing to play their postponed game at a new date but that will not now happen. The ruling makes it difficult but not impossible for the hurlers to win this year's league final and leaves them with games against Dublin, Wexford and Antrim to come. The footballers had expected to challenge for promotion out of Division 2 of the NFL but will now instead be fighting a relegation battle. Additionally the Cork county board have been fined Eur400 per game they failed to field a team in. To view the updated league tables click on: http://www.hoganstand.com/general/leagues/leagues.aspx
