Honohan agent claims enrage Cork players

November 20, 2007
Cork GAA has been rocked by a new controversy following claims by Central Council delegate Bob Honohan that the players refer requests to present medals and attend functions to an agent. Honohan's comments come at a time when the Cork players are up in arms over the recent county board decision to strip managers of the power to appoint their own selectors. It has emerged that a two-thirds majority will be required to reverse the controversial decision if a vote is taken on it at a county board meeting on Tuesday night. Speaking on local radio, Honohan stated there was a perception that the impasse between the county senior panels and the county board was down to money. "Some would say that, I suppose, that at the end of the day it's all about euros in some form or other, either in hard cash or like," he said. "A lot of players nowadays are doing very, very well from being prominent hurlers and footballers, and fair play to them if they are operating within the rules. "We spoke earlier about perceptions, and perceptions aren't always right, but the perception is that there are some Cork hurlers who are doing very, very well indeed, and that if a club asked them to officiate a function or present medals to juveniles, they're referred to agents. So be it if they're operating within the rules." A players' representative hit back by saying: "We're very angry with those comments - we could cite 203 different functions that players attended in the last year absolutely free."
