Monaghan GAA mourns Aidan Quigley

October 23, 2015

The late Aidan Quigley

There was a deep sense of shock and sadness when news of the sudden death of former county board chairman Aidan Quigley broke on Thursday afternoon, October 22.

The Scothouse man's passing robs the GAA of another stalwart at both club and county level. Aidan served at both levels with distinction as a player and after his footballing career came to an end as an able administrator.

As a player, Aidan represented his club Currin Sons of St Patrick at all levels and also represented Monaghan in all levels in football and also played hurling for the county. He first became involved in administrative affairs at county level when he was elected as secretary of the original minor board in 1988.

He moved on from there to serve as vice-chairman of the County Board from 1988 to 1992 and then stepped up and acted with distinction as chairman of the County Board between 1993 and 1997.

A couple of the highlights of his term in office included the successful steering of the motion regarding the playing of inter-county minor football and hurling championship matches during the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations through Annual Congress and Monaghan winning the All Ireland Junior Hurling championship title in 1997.

At club level he has served in a number of capacities, including that of chairman on more than one occasion, and at the time of his death he was delegate to the county board.

A true Gael, Aidan's death deprives the Association of a dedicated volunteer. But it also deprives his family of a dedicated and loving father and husband. We extend our deepest sympathies to them at this very sad time.

Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.
