GAA president Liam O'Neill has been named the Laois Person of the Year for 2012.

The Trumera clubman received the prestigious award from Leinster Express editor Pat Somers at the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards in Portlaoise's Killeshin Hotel last night. The awards were hosted by the Laois Community Forum and supported by Laois County Council, the Laois Sports Partnership and the Leinster Express.

The award caps a memorable year for the primary school principal, who assumed the GAA's highest position last April. O'Neill has been involved in GAA administration for 30 years and previously served as chairman of the Leinster Council.
