Road crash victims were staunch Limerick fans

The three men who were killed in a tragic car crash near their home town of Newcastle West on Sunday evening were Limerick GAA fanatics.

Richard Furey (37), Tommy Holmes (32) and Tom Murphy (32) died when the hackney they were travelling in was in collision with another car which was carrying players from the Fr. Casey's GAA club in neighbouring Abbeyfeale, who were returning from a match.

Miraculously, Limerick county footballer Padraig Browne and three of his Fr. Casey's team-mates - Seamus Lenihan, Thomas Enright and Joe Kelliher- were unhurt in the crash.

Yesterday, the people of Newcastle West were struggling to come to terms with the awful tragedy. The three friends had been returning from the Listowel Races where they had spent the day.

Local Fine Gael Cllr Jerome Scanlon said: "Richard, Tommy and Tom did all the right things. They planned the day out in advance and hired a taxi so they could have a few drinks. This is tragic for the three families and for everyone connected to them."
