Sambo: Deises can't be content with final place
September 05, 2008
Antrim co-manager Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton believes that Davy Fitzgerald's biggest task this weekend is to convince his Waterford players to not be satisfied with an All-Ireland final place.
McNaughton wrote in a column of today's Irish Examiner that it was 'hard to come up with anything other than a Kilkenny win' but admitted that if the Deises were still in the game with 15 minutes go that anything could happen.
"The biggest thing for Waterford is whether their players are just happy to have got to a final after breaking their semi-final duck. I think subconsciously some of their players will be thinking that. The challenge for Davy is to make sure that does not happen.
"Since Davy's come in I think he's done a good job but in any sport when a new management comes in you have guys out to impress."
While lauding the effect that Fitzgerald has had one the team, 'Sambo' also paid tribute to former boss Justin McCarthy, who he felt also deserved some credit for the run the Munster side have had these past two months.
"New players try to make a name for themselves with a new manager. I do feel for Justin McCarthy a bit, it's his team in a lot of ways and Davy has just taken it on. Davy brought hype with him but he was always going to have them well-prepared following the great experience he had from Clare and LIT.
"Waterford need to make sure they're still in the game with 15 minutes to go. They can't let the game get away from them. Kilkenny are the one side who can kill you with scores at the start of the first or the second-half and then you are left chasing shadows."
