All-Ireland SFC down to last eight after Donegal thump Louth

The All-Ireland senior football championship is down to its quarter-finals stage after Donegal knocked out Louth with an emphatic 2-22 to 0-12 victory in Ballybofey this afternoon.

Jim McGuinness’s side were held by the Leinster champions for large portions of the opening half at MacCumhaill Park before Conor O’Donnell’s break away goal in the run up to the break sent the hosts in with a 1-6 to 0-7 lead.

The second-half would see the Ulster champions dominating for long spells, increasing their advantage to six points prior to Ciaran Thompson firing to the net in his 50th championship appearance for the Tir Chonaill County.

Oisin Gallen’s point made it double scores (2-12 to 0-9) by the 50th minute, and Michael Lagan’s two-pointer would be backed up by points from O’Donnell, Gallen and Dara O Baoill without response from the visitors.

Peter Lynch and Sam Mulroy got consolation points for Ger Brennan’s men before Ciaran Downey rounded off their tally prior to the final whistle, which signalled Donegal’s return to the last eight of the Sam Maguire Cup race as they await to see who they pick out of the hat in tomorrow morning’s draw.
