Waterford advanced to Phase 2 of the Munster U20 football championship for the first time since its introduction thanks to a win over Tipperary yesterday (Friday) evening.

It finished 1-17 to 0-11 in Lemybrien, where Daithí Colleran’s punched goal after a dozen minutes (watch below) helped set-up a famous win for the Deise lads.

That strike helped the hosts to lead by 1-7 to 0-3 at the halfway stage and the scores of Joe Brennan, Colleran and Paddy McCarthy helped their side to win out by nine points in the end.

It means that Waterford can now look forward to games against Kerry and Cork in Phase 2 of the southern province, with a clashing against the Kingdom, who are defending champions, up first next Thursday evening.

They’ll also face Clare in the second phase of matches, with the Banner lads having recorded a 2-11 to 0-10 win over Limerick in Rathkeale on Friday.

Meanwhile, the result mean that Tipp and Limerick both miss out on progression to Phase 2 of the Munster U20FC, with the sides now set to meet in the competition’s B final on Thursday evening Mallow.
