Sean Ryan’s goal at the death saw Wexford stun Westmeath at Chadwicks Wexford Park this afternoon and earn promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League.

The Slaneysiders’ 2-16 to 1-18 victory saw them coming from eight points down the closing 15 minutes to snatch the win which sees them promoted for the second time in 12 months.

Westmeath had struck the last five points of the first-half to lead by 0-10 to 0-5 at the interval and looked to be on their way towards joining Down in the Division 2 final after Jonathan Lynam’s goal put them into a 1-16 to 0-11 lead in the 58th minute.

However, Lynam’s goal was wiped out by a major from Ryan two minutes afterwards, igniting the Model men as Mark Rossiter saw his point backed up by a Darragh Brooks free from beyond the arc.

Matthew Whittaker shot Westmeath back into a four-point lead, but Brooks would repeat the trick at the other end before Ryan hammered in a goal which will see Wexford playing their league football in the second-tier next season.

Meanwhile, Sligo ensured their survival in Division 3 with a 2-23 to 0-28 win against Clare at Markievicz Park.

The Yeats men were 0-22 to 0-17 behind when they had a Lee Deignan two-pointer backed up by a Kyle Cawley goal in the 55th minute.

Mark McInerney put Clare back into the lead before Cian Lally hammered home Sligo’s second goal in the 58th minute and, from there, the points of Pat Spillane, Luke Towey, Deignan and Jack Lavin would be enough to get the Connacht men over the line.

The result means that Limerick are relegated to Division 4 alongside Fermanagh despite the Treaty men’s 2-15 to 0-20 win over the Ernesiders at Mick Neville Park.

Elsewhere, already promoted Down were inflicted with their first loss of the campaign by Laois at Pairc Elser, where Paul Kingston bagged both goals for the visitors who finished fourth in the league table with three wins, three defeats and a draw.
