Seneschalstown 3-08 St. Patrick’s 1-17

Seneschalstown went down to a three point defeat in the second of their Meath Cleaning Supplies Junior All-County FC Division 5 Group B matches played in Stamullen on Monday night. A bit like their Senior counterparts on Sunday, they were left to wonder what might have been had they brought their shooting boots in the opening half.

The visitors to the east Meath village got off the mark quickly with Ross Mullen pointing inside the opening minute. However by the time they scored again, St. Patrick’s would have 1-06 on the scoreboard including a goal from a penalty in the 21st minute.

Johnny Gilsenan got his team’s second point just after that penalty but the home side pushed their advantage out with a further four points including a two point free to lead by eleven points after 26 minutes.

Seneschalstown though did hit back with the last two points of the half through Bryan Clarke and Ross Mullen as they trailed 1-10 to 0-04 at the break.

Despite conceding the first point after half-time, there was a marked improvement in Seneschalstown in the second half. They got a major boost two minutes in when Podge Finegan palmed to the net. This gave them some momentum and a little under three minutes later Charles McCarthy got in for Seneschalstown’s second goal to leave four points in it.

St. Pat’s though were able to keep the scoreboard ticking at the other end and that’s what they did prior to a two point score from Johnny Gilsenan in 43rd minute which left a goal between them.

However, Seneschalstown couldn’t break the point for point nature of the half and after further points from Gilsenan and Clarke Seneschalstown trailed by four, 1-15 to 2-08 with time almost up.

They were given a big lifeline though when Clarke found the net to reduce the gap to one point and give them a chance of snatching something from the game. Unfortunately though, St. Pat’s were able to pick off two further points to ensure victory and keep them at the top of the table.

All is not lost for Seneschalstown however, they play Simonstown Gaels in Round 3 with the winner advancing to a semi-final.
