FL Div 4: Valuable two points on the road for Ultans

St Ultans 3-19 Drumbaragh 1-12

St Ultans secured a valuable two points away to Drumbaragh. Drumbaragh opened the scoring with a two point free. Cillian Yore drove forward from wing back to score from play but this was quickly cancelled out. Ultans got their first goal of the day from Conor Finnegan who finished to the net after being played in by Daragh Reilly. Drumbaragh brought the sides level with a 45. Ultans then hit a purple patch with Conor Finnegan pointing from just inside the 2 point arc. This was followed by two well taken points from Adam Rogers. Charlie O’Brien won a kick well in midfield and Ultans transitioned at speed to set Rogers up for a goal.

A Conor Finnegan free extended the lead to seven, a two point free for the hosts narrowed the gap. Jonny Foster fisted over for the visitors but further scores from Drumbaragh brought the gap back to four. Cillian Yore raised Ultans first orange flag with a crucial score. Drumbaragh drove forward and created and  a goal chance but an excellent save from Keith Hennessy denied the hosts. Darragh Reilly pointed to leave seven between the sides at the break.

Leads are quickly eroded with the new rules so a good start was crucial for Ultans. Conor Finnegan sent the ball over the bar from play with an excellent score from just inside the arc. Drumbaragh responded with a point, Jonny Foster improvised to flick the ball over the bar with his boot for a crucial score, quickly followed by a Cillian Yore point on another raid forward. Drumbaragh were again denied by an excellent Hennessy save. A fine two pointer from Drumbaragh reduced the gap to seven but Darragh Reilly responded with a point. Drumbaragh drove forward again and William Carry raised a green flag.

Ultans response to this setback was positive and Reilly again raised a white flag. Tommy Buchanan finished powerfully to the net to regain control of the game. Further points from Finnegan, Reilly and a two point free from Keith Hennessy and Ruairi Buchanan ensured victory.

Next up for St Ultans is a trip to Longwood on Sunday 7th.
