Seneschalstown 2-13 St. Patrick’s 1-13
Seneschalstown picked up a second away win on the trot when outlasting St. Patrick’s in this JM Food Services Football League Division 2 Round 7 encounter played in a sunny but damp Stamullen on Saturday evening. Despite leading by ten points at one point in the first half, Seneschalstown had to dig it out in the closing staged after the home side had the margin down to a point after two two point efforts in a short burst before Seneschalstown regained their composure.
The visitors were first to score on the evening when Dylan Keating landed a wind assisted two pointer before St. Patrick’s opened their account for the evening in the fourth minute.
In the seventh minute, Seneschalstown got their first goal when Eoin Finnegan got in around the back of the defensive cover but as he got towards goal his bounce skidded away from him. However he still has space to pull on the ball and he lashed it across the face of goal and into the top left corner for a stunning finish.
The home side again replied with their second point but Alan Mulvany and Éamon Finnegan added to Seneschalstown’s growing lead. Finnegan’s point was down in no small part to Cian Commons who battled well to win a ball a high ball in the Seneschalstown attack.
The resulting St. Pat’s kickout went straight into the path of Eoin Finnegan and the corner forward showed composure to slot the ball beyond the goalkeeper for his fourth goal in two outings. Five minutes later he was on target again when he landed a long range free to raise an orange flag and Seneschalstown lead by double digits.
However, Seneschalstown will be disappointed by the concession of a goal five minutes later which gave St. Patrick’s some momentum and they followed up with two further points to half the previous ten point lead.
Seneschalstown did recover to get the last two scores of the half. Firstly Éamon Finnegan fisted over when came in along the endline before Cian Commons tapped over a routine free with the last kick of the opening thirty minutes to leave Seneschalstown ahead by double scores at the break, 2-08 to 1-04.
It looked like the second half would follow the same pattern as the first when Seneschalstown came roaring out of the blocks with Éamon Finnegan slicing the ball between the posts after a swift move from the throw-in. When Cian Commons added a free in the 33rd minute the lead was back up to nine points and Seneschalstown looked well on their way to a comfortable victory.
However the home side started to rally. Seneschalstown were guilty of poor shooting and giving the ball away a few tones too many as they went twenty five minutes without a score as the Stamullen outfit reduced the gap to the minimum as a result of eight points in twelve minutes which included two orange flags.
Credit must go to Seneschalstown though for the way they managed the remainder of the game as they ensured St. Patrick’s couldn’t get level before they eventually broke their scoring duck in the 58th minutes when Dylan Keating came up with a crucial score for the eventual winners and a minute later Eoin Finnegan, who could have a had a hattrick if he wanted to go low, chose to punch over from close range and now there was three in it with less than a minute of normal time remaining.
From here Seneschalstown were able to see the game out, with a point for each team arriving in injury time with Cian Commons getting the last score of the game from a free straight in front of the posts as Seneschalstown join a cluster of five teams on eight points all in joint fourth position in the table heading into a crucial round of matches next weekend where they all play each other.
For David Hosie’s men, they welcome a familiar face in the form of Joe Sheridan and his Oldcastle side to Fr. Tully Park next Saturday evening at 18:00.
