SHC: Nolan stars but Dunderry lose out

September 09, 2025

Dunderry's Evan Nolan

Na Fianna 4-15 Dunderry 4-11

Dunderry made the short trip to Dunganny for their final group game against Na Fianna.

Cathal Barron was the first to register a score with a fine point from play after Duffy and Treacy combined well to pick him out. Na Fianna pointed from play before Nolan pointed his first free of the day after Loughran was fouled clearing his line. One two from play had the opposition up by four. Barron went on the attack but was taken down and Nolan reduced the deficit.  Another brace of points put five between the sides. Mark Leavy scored neatly but the opponents went back down the field and hit us for a goal and point.  Leavy tried to break through but he too was pulled down and Nolan slotted over leaving seven the difference.  Three on the trot on the run up to half time had Dunderry in bother but another Nolan Free kept the difference in single digits.  A killer blow came next however when a long range effort of a free dropped straight into the net on the last play of the opening half.

A big ask ahead for the lads.

The second half started with another duo of points stretching the gap even further. Leavy was held back once more and Nolan dutifully pointed the free. The same thing happened again however as the Baconstown men hit two more from play. Another free for the blacks resulted in a goal when Nolan sent a rocket into the top corner from twenty five yards.

Conor Leavy struck a point over on the run as we gained a bit of momentum. Barron and Mark Leavy linked well and got the sliothar to Nolan who burried it inside the near post. Conor Leavy pointed again and now the difference was down to seven. William Tracey took off up the line, passed to half time substitute Donagh Ó Laoire who got Mark Leavy involved and he in turn passed to Liam Dempsey.  Dempseys pass to Nolan was perfect and once more a green flag was raised. Na Fianna responded from play but two frees from Nolan earned him 1-1 as he rattled the net for a fourth time. Cathal Barron pointed and now the deficit was down to two. The Na Fianna lads however got back on the attack and put over a point and a free to put four between the teams before the final whistle sounded and that was that.

The goal on the stroke of half time was the one that hurt the most and the twelve point gap proved to be insurmountable.

A gallant effort however and next up is a B quarter final against Longwood on 21st Sept.
