Gaeil Colmcille's Liam Devine heads for the Wolfe Tones goals during the IHC clash at Kilskyre

Gaeil Colmcille 3-06 Wolfe Tones 1-07

The first round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship between Gaeil Colmcille and Wolfe Tones took place in sweltering conditions in Kilskyre with the Kells men overcoming a five point deficit to eventually run out five point winners. Both teams will be thankful for referee Owen Ganly’s decision to allow water breaks.

The first half was short on highlights. An excellent defensive effort against the breeze limited Wolfe Tones to four points, but at the other end Kells managed to convert only one point out of eleven chances created. That solitary score came from Tiernan Anderson and equalised a Wolfe Tones opening point. Two points from play either side of a converted free accounted for the remaining Tones first half scores.

A bright start to the second half for Wolfe Tones saw them extend their lead by two points with a free and another from play. Kells got the spark they needed six minutes into the second half when Conall McGoverns fine finish past the advancing goalkeeper produced the first goal of the game.

Inspired by that goal, the Gaeil’s soon equalised through points from Gary McGovern and a Stephen Reddy free. Another Reddy free, mid-way through the half evaded both defenders and attackers to find the back of the net. A Wolfe Tones point was cancelled out by another Reddy free before Liam Ferguson stretched the lead to four.

As the game entered the closing minutes Wolfe Tones got a lifeline when a close in free was fired to the back of the net. The Kells response was almost immediate. After a strong run along the end line Evan Sheridan passed the ball across the square for the in rushing McGovern to crash the ball to the net. Just before the final whistle, Shane Callaghan rounded off the scoring with the Gaeils sixth point.
